PALESTINE —
Known for its elaborate floats and carnival atmosphere, the Grapeland Chamber of Commerce will hold its 67th Annual Peanut Festival today, kicking off at 10 a.m. with the Peanut Parade.
The parade will travel down Main Street in Grapeland featuring floats, antique tractors, classic cars, the Peanut Festival Coronation contestants and more.
Prior to the parade, a 5K Run for kids will start at 8 a.m. followed by a 5K Run for adults at 8:30 a.m. at Salmon Lake Park. Registration will start at 7:30 p.m.
Festivities will continue throughout the day at the Main Street Peanut Carnival in Grapeland starting at 10 a.m. featuring rides, live music, arts and crafts and lots of food — including roasted peanuts.
Five young ladies will vie for the Peanut Festival Queen title at the coronation at 7 p.m. at the Lorena Shoultz Auditorium. Tickets are $10 each and available at Walling’s Pharmacy in Grapeland.
Contestants include:
• Riley Benthul — Riley is the daughter of Andy and Martice Benthul. She plans to major in fashion, dance, or marketing in hopes of one day owning her own cheerleading/gymnastics gym. She is sponsored by Elite Fitness.
• Eden Owens — Eden is the daughter of Tim and Brenda Owens. She plans to attend Christ for the Nations Institute in the fall, then attend Stephen F. Austin State University to obtain a degree in Theater Arts to pursue a career in performing arts. She is sponsored by Frontier Camp.
• Julie Riess — Julie is the daughter of Barrett and Margaret Riess. She plans to attend The University of Texas and study to be an actuary and hopes to one day own her own business. She is sponsored by Grapeland Noon Lions Club.
• Paige Scott — Paige is the daughter of Ernest and Leontine Scott. Paige plans to attend Texas Southern University and major in criminal justice and pursue a career as an attorney. She is sponsored by Winfield Nursing Center.
• Kalee Walker — Kalee is the daughter Kristi and Jason Estes and Ronald Walker. Kalee plans to attend The University of North Texas and major in kinesiology to pursue a career in sports psychology. She is sponsored by George Bartee Construction.
The festival opened Thursday with a family carnival night and Friday with the Grapeland Sandies’ homecoming pep rally and football game.
