Voter registration for primary election ends Monday

PALESTINE — Monday is the last day to register to vote or make other changes to your registration for next month’s party primary elections.

Party primary elections at the county, state and national levels were originally slated for March, but ultimately got pushed back to May 29 due to a series of legal battles regarding the redrawing of the state’s political boundaries.

Early voting in Anderson County for the party primary elections runs from Monday, May 14 through Friday, May 25 and will be conducted in Room 103A of the Anderson County Courthouse Annex located at 703 N. Mallard St. in Palestine, according to Casey Brown, elections administrator for Anderson County.

Anderson County has several local contested races in the Republican Primary, including sheriff which pits incumbent Greg Taylor against Richard Welch, a former Anderson County sheriff’s deputy who now works as a Palestine policeman.

Other contested GOP races and the participants include precinct 1 constable (Ronnie Foster and Jeff Taylor) and precinct 3 constable (Kim Dickson and Ronnie Holcomb).

No Democrats filed their candidacy in the sheriff and precinct 3 constable races, so the Republican winner will begin serving a four-year term on Jan. 1, 2013.

The Republican nominee for precinct 1 constable, meanwhile, will face long-time officeholder Larry Bennett, a Democrat, in the Nov. 6 general election.
