PALESTINE —
Early voting begins Monday in Anderson County and throughout the area for next month's city and school elections.
Early voting will continue on weekdays through Tuesday, May 8.
Election Day is Saturday, May 12.
Palestine has contested races in the city and both local school districts.
The Palestine City Council will feature a contested election in District 1 as Will Brule and Ricky Minton both filed for the spot.
Current District 1 Councilman Adam Harding, who was appointed to the post in May 2010, chose not to seek re-election.
Early voting in the city race will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at Palestine City Hall, with the exceptions of May 3 and 8 when extended hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. will be available to voters.
Incumbent Vickey Chivers (District 3) and appointed incumbent Therrell Thomas (District 5) both filed for their positions and did not draw an opponent.
In the Palestine Independent School District, Place 1 incumbent Dyna Tutt faces challenger Mitchell Jordan.
Place 2 member Wade Hobbs, the PISD board president, has earned another term as the lone filer for that post.
Early voting in the PISD race will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the district's administrative offices at 1007 E. Park Ave.
The Westwood Independent School District also has a contested race as District 4 member Lisa Gilkey will be challenged by John Tilley.
Longtime WISD trustee Carey McKinney, meanwhile, was the lone person to file in the District 1 race.
Early voting in the WISD race will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the WISD administrative offices at 4524 W. Oak St.
For those waiting until the May 12 Election Day, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at various locations in the races.
