14-year-old boy killed in train accident
LONG LAKE — A 14-year-old boy was killed shortly before noon Saturday when he was hit by a train near Long Lake in southwestern Anderson County.
Troy Black, chief deputy for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, said the deceased boy, his 30-year-old stepfather, his 11-year-old brother and a 14-year-old friend had parked off of CR 2123 in Long Lake and walked about 1/2 mile down the tracks to a trestle where the fatal accident occurred.
The man and three boys were apparently out “shooting,” according to the chief deputy.
“When the train came around the bend, everybody laid down,” Black said, “but this one boy didn’t make it. There’s very little room.”
The incident was reported to authorities at 11:56 a.m. Saturday, according to the chief deputy.
The trestle was several hundred yards long, and the four persons were almost to the opposite end at the time of the fatal accident, according to the chief deputy.
The chief deputy did not immediately release the deceased boy’s name.
Anderson County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Carl Davis pronounced the boy dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy.
The trestle was elevated between 30-to-40 feet above the ground, the chief deputy said. The area below was described by Black as “marshy” with a lot of brush.
The Union Pacific train was traveling towards Palestine at the time of the accident, with an ultimate destination of Longview, according to the chief deputy.
“It’s a real tragic accident,” Black said.
