PALESTINE — With seven weeks remaining before Christmas, downtown merchants and building owners are beginning to prepare for the holidays.
The Downtown Merchants Association, the Main Street Advisory Board and the Convention and Visitors Bureau are teaming up to promote more reasons for people to visit downtown Palestine during the holiday season. They’ve adopted “All Rails Lead to Palestine Christmas Season” as the theme tying a variety of activities together.
Several activities are planned this week to kick off the holiday season.
On Monday and Tuesday, volunteers can help “fluff” the city’s artificial Christmas wreaths after months of being packed away in boxes and attach new red bows to them to make ready for their hanging on public buildings and street light poles in the Main Street area.
Those wishing to help can meet at the Main Street Palestine office in the Carnegie Building at 502 N. Queen St. anytime from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Refreshments will be provided.
For those business and building owners wishing to really go green during the holidays, branches of pine, magnolia, cedar and holly will be available free of charge on Thursday in the Redlands parking lot between W. Main Street and W. Oak Street. The branches have been donated by local individuals for use in decorating downtown.
In addition, local attorney Hugh Summers has a supply of white lights available at no cost for use by Main Street area businesses and building owners wishing to outline the roofs of their buildings. Main Street merchants and building owners interested in using the lights should call Summers at 903-724-5800.
On Friday and Saturday, Main Street businesses in the downtown and Old Town areas are planning to hold a “Deck the Halls” open house to kick off the holiday season with decorations, Christmas music and of course, specials and new merchandise.
Also, business and building owners are beginning to decorate their store front windows with holiday displays as part of a Christmas Decorating Contest sponsored by the CVB. Those wishing to participate are required to fill out and turn in an entry form to the Visitors Center to be judged.
