PHS band member Witt receives state UIL honors
PALESTINE — Palestine High School band member Laura Witt recently was awarded the designation of “Outstanding Performer” at the University Interscholastic League’s Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest for her performance on the French horn.
“This is a big deal,” PHS band director Shawn Murphy said. “Of the 85,000 students competing at region, only 22,000 made it to state; and from there only 256 of the state qualifiers performed well enough to earn this tremendous honor.”
According to Murphy, Witt earned a first division on her French horn solo at the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest, and also was awarded the designation of UIL State Champion.
“Laura’s performance of the ‘Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1’ was selected as an outstanding performance by her judge, who placed her in the top one percent of the 22,000 musicians who competed at the state contest held at Texas State University in San Marcos,” Murphy said.
For her honors, Witt was awarded a gold medal — the same gold medal awarded to all UIL State Champions.
“This is the beginning of big things to come,” Murphy said. “Way to go Laura!”
Witt will attend PHS as a senior in the fall. She is the daughter of Mike and Peggy Witt of Palestine.
