Ingram memorial tourney reaps $50,000 for area grads
PALESTINE — This year’s William Ingram Memorial Golf Tournament raised in excess of $50,000, reaching an all-time high. The annual tournament is held each year in the spring at the Meadowbrook Country Club to raise funds for scholarships.
The William Ingram Scholarship Fund, Inc. was created in 1998 in memory of William Bonner Ingram, a 1995 Palestine High School graduate who was killed in an automobile accident.
The fund was set up by his family to help other young people in the area pursue their education. To date, 24 students from Anderson County schools have been awarded $180,000 in scholarship money.
The tournament has become the largest held at Meadowbrook, often with a waiting list of entries.
Friends of Ingram and his family, along with many local sponsors and underwriters of the event, look forward each year to the two-day, three-man scramble tournament, which offers a variety of activities and fund-raising opportunities.
The tournament receives an outpouring of community support that includes volunteers and underwriting most of the expenses associated with hosting such a large event.
Anderson County graduates are encouraged to apply by mid-April 2008 for next year’s scholarships. Applications are available from area high school counselors or by calling the East Texas National Bank’s Trust Dept.
Students applying are required to provide a copy of their high school transcript and a copy of their parents’ or legal guardians’ income tax return as proof of financial need, and must meet the following requirements:
• Is in need of financial assistance;
• Has worked hard to achieve his/her goals;
• Is involved in extra-curricular activities;
• Is involved in the community;
• Has maintained good grades (not necessarily A’s);
• Is a complete student and represents their school with pride.
