One-in-four Texans has unclaimed property from forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, security deposits and utility refunds. Texas is currently holding more than $2.6 billion in cash and other valuables waiting for the rightful owners to claim.
Banks and companies make effort to unite these assets with their owners, but if they cannot after a one- to five-year period, state law requires the assets to be turned over to the Comptroller’s office. Then, the Comptroller’s Unclaimed Property Division works to give Texas citizens back what is rightfully theirs through its annual “Unclaimed Property” event and dedicated website (www.ClaimItTexas.org).
“Many folks could use some extra cash right now, and we want to give Texans back their property, whether it is personal property or money that could save taxpayer dollars by going back to city and county treasuries,” Comptroller Susan Combs said in a news release.
As part of the annual event to reach the public, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts office of Susan Combs will hold an Unclaimed Property Search event next week in Palestine.
The Unclaimed Property Search will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 at the Anderson County Courthouse Annex, Room 103A, located at 703 N. Mallard St. in Palestine.
Identification is not necessary to search, but if you are filing a claim, you will need to bring a picture identification and Social Security card to speed up the process.
Access to the Unclaimed Property Search for Anderson County also is available online on the Anderson County website at www.co.anderson.tx.us. The county website has three links — State of Texas Unclaimed Property Search Event (flyer), State of Texas Unclaimed Property List for Anderson County and www.ClaimItTexas.org (state website to search and claim money).
On the State of Texas Unclaimed Property List for Anderson County, residents are advised to scroll to the right of the spreadsheet document to see the amount of property and/or cash unclaimed and where it is from.
For example, unclaimed property ranges from just a few cents to thousands of dollars for Anderson County residents.
