PALESTINE —
Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor reported that the County Jail has passed a surprise inspection by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards that took place on Wednesday and Thursday.
“We have a surprise inspection every year,” Taylor said. “They come in and do a very thorough inspection — looking at inmate records, life safety and security and talking to the inmates themselves.”
With the exception of a few minor issue regarding paperwork, the jail passed the inspection.
“With those very minor issues, they just instruct us on correcting it,” Taylor said. “If it were a major issue, we would have failed.”
The sheriff credited the consistent hard work if the jail staff for the accomplishment.
“The staff is doing a great job,” he said. “It is major undertaking, keeping up with all the paperwork involved with each inmate, but they do a fantastic job.”
According to Taylor, the county jail has a capacity of 300, and as of Thursday, were housing 163 inmates.
“Our judges/courts are doing a good job keeping things going and keeping inmates moving through the system,” Taylor said.
