PALESTINE —
Kim's No. 5 convenience store north of the Palestine city limits sustained "minimal damage" Thursday due to a small electrical fire, according to a local law enforcement official.
Anderson County Precinct 2 Constable Doug Lightfoot said the fire at the convenience store at the U.S. 287/Texas 19 split north of the city limits was dispatched around 1 p.m. Thursday.
"Basically, the paged it out for Montalba, Tennessee Colony and Westside (volunteer fire departments)," Lightfoot said. "At the time the page came out, I was at the 287/19 intersection.
"They (store personnel) were in the process of people coming out of the store because of smoke inside the store," Lightfoot said. "...There were about three or four people in the store and the fire departments arrived fairly quick."
The constable said a Frito-Lay delivery person "went around back and disconnected the power."
The fire was concentrated on an electrical panel in a storage area of the store, according to the constable.
After all the customers had exited the store, Lightfoot said "a dry chemical" was used to help stymie the fire.
Volunteer fireman then used a CO2 fire extinguisher "to cool the electrical box down," according to the constable.
"Once the box was cooled down," Lightfoot said, "they used a fan to clear the smoke out of the building."
Representatives of Oncor and a electrician helped get the store back "online" and open before the end of the day.
"I only think they were closed six-to-eight hours," Lightfoot said.
