Holiday food, toy collection set Saturday

PALESTINE — Santa Claus will make his first appearance in Palestine this year for the Cars of Palestine’s Holiday Food and Toy Collection on Saturday.

The event will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. at Hershel’s parking lot on Loop 256 across from the Palestine Mall.

“Santa will be there with his elves passing out candy canes to children and taking pictures,” Cars of Palestine spokeswoman Candis Wells said. “Don’t forget you can make a difference in a child’s life by either donating new, unwrapped toy for distribution here in Anderson County. Food is always a necessity and you can make a difference in a family just by donating a few canned goods and nonperishable items to help a good cause.”

 The club will be collecting food and toys to be given out during the holidays to those who are in need. These items will be divided and given to three agencies here in Palestine.

At least 15 to 20 classic cars will be on display during the event as the organization hopes to “fill the convertible” and antique trucks with toys and non-perishable food items.

“We’ve contacted area car clubs in Crockett, Corsicana, Athens and Jacksonville to come over and join us for what would be our cruise-in night,” Wells said.

In the past, the car club has held separate collection nights for the food and toys — but decided to put it together for this year’s event. In addition, the event will be held during the day when more people are out shopping.

“The food banks I am familiar with are saying that the  number of people seeking assistance has tripled and there are more children and more adults needing assistance,” Wells said. “I feel like the need is really great due to the economic times here in Palestine and Anderson County and we want to do our part.”

There is no charge to have a photo made with Santa Claus.
