PALESTINE —
Small business owners in Anderson County have access to a wide range of free consulting services at the Small Business Development Center in Palestine.
“Whether you are starting a new business or already operating one, we can help. There is absolutely no cost for the services we provide. One-on-one business consultations and advisory services is what the SBDC is all about,” said Mark Price, newly appointed SBDC business adviser for Palestine.
Price and his family have lived in Palestine for 19 years. He served as the superintendent of the Texas State Railroad State Park for 14 years and recently retired as the County Extension Agent for Anderson County. His business background also includes being a realtor for United Country – Southland Realty and serving as the chairman of the Palestine Economic Development Corp.
“The SBDC has been serving Anderson County since 1984. It is my pleasure to be able to utilize the resources of the SBDC to help our business community,” Price said.
The SBDC is part of a nationwide network that links the resources of federal, state and local governments to those of colleges, universities and the private sector to meet the specialized needs of any type of small business.
“We want to stress, that we are here not only to serve individuals who in the process of starting a business; we also assist established businesses as well. The SBDC can find resources for business expansion, find new markets and develop marketing strategies,” Price said. “We assist clients with writing business plans and we provide advice related to government regulations.”
Price also coordinates extensive counseling with the regional specialists in the Dallas SBDC office.
For example in September, a local Palestine business was linked with a SBDC government contract specialist. The business is now receiving free, one-on-one counseling from one of the state’s leading government contracts expert.
The Palestine SBDC office has counseled hundreds of clients with various business ventures.
In October, Nikki and Paula Chaffin celebrated the grand opening of Sew What. Located on Oak Street in the old Grimes Sewing Center in Palestine; the women fulfilled their dream of opening a sewing and quilting business.
“The SBDC was very helpful in directing us to resources we needed to start our business,” Nikki Chaffin said.
Sew What caters to the needs of all sewer and quilters.
“No matter if you are a novice or a professional, Sew What provides materials, patterns, sewing machines, custom quilting and a lot of friendly, personal advice,” Price said. “Nikki and Paula are well versed in all types of sewing and quilting.”
