PALESTINE —
The Palestine Firefighter Association is hoping to “Scare Out Hunger” with its third annual Fright Night event, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday at the old garment factory at 3600 W. Oak St.
The “longer and bigger” haunted house continues at 7 p.m. on Saturday and at the same time on Oct. 26, 27 and 31
Admission for the event is $10 each, but is cut to the event’s previous rate of $5 with the donation of two canned goods.
“We are not trying to raise prices to be greedy, but are hoping to encourage the donation of canned goods for ‘Scare Out Hunger,” PFA President Jeff Cooper said. “All the food donations we receive will be distributed here in Palestine to local food banks.”
This year’s event includes 22 different scenes covering 1,700 square feet including the chain saw room, the cemetery, a clown room, the insane asylum and the vampire study.
“We have anywhere from 35 to 50 people volunteer for the event — some are firefighters and some are local volunteers,” Cooper said. “Volunteers from Chris Thompson Construction/Foundation Specialists of East Texas and Chick Time have been helping us get ready.”
Red Hats Rentals is the primary sponsor of the event, providing the generators and lighting setups needed to make the event possible. The Palestine Police Officers Association will man a concession stand.
Local photographer Lee Loveless has donated his time to take group photos at this year’s Fright Night, with 3x5 prints available for $5 (printed on site).
“The WHS Art Department has painted the backdrop for those photos,” Cooper said. “T-shirts will be available for sale at the event for $10 each, while supplies last. We usually sell out of those.”
Anyone can come to the event, but children under 13 must be chaperoned by a guardian.
The Fright Night event serves as one of the Firefighter Association’s main fundraisers, bringing in about $12,000 in the first year and about $20,000 last year.
All of the money raised by PFA goes back into the community through things like providing gifts for children at Christmas, adopting elderly residents and/or reinvestment in Fright Night.
“We do a lot of projects, so every dollar goes back into the community,” Cooper said.
