Human remains believed to be female, mid-30s

PALESTINE — Anderson County sheriff's authorities say they believe the decomposed remains found in a wooded area north of Palestine Sunday are those of a white female.

Around 4 p.m. Sunday, Anderson County sheriff's deputies responded to a wooded area near the northwest corner of the intersection of Texas 155 and FM 321 after receiving a report of a body being located there by the property owner.

Due to the body's condition, Troy Black, chief deputy for the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, said investigators were unable to determine the deceased person's "race, sex or age."

Authorities estimated the person had been deceased up to a week and possibly longer.

An autopsy was performed on the body Tuesday at the Southeast Texas Forensic Science Center in Tyler.

On Wednesday, Black said authorities have been able to make some determinations relating to the deceased person's identity.

"We do know it was a white female in her mid-30s," Black said, "and we are working it as a crime scene."

Anderson County sheriff's Capt. Jay Russell is the case's lead investigator.
