PALESTINE —
Authorities continued on Tuesday to attempt to identify a person whose decomposed remains were discovered late Sunday afternoon in a wooded area north of Palestine.
Anderson County sheriff’s officials say they were contacted around 4 p.m. Sunday after a private citizen reported finding a decomposed human body on their property near the intersection of Texas 155 and FM 321, north of Palestine.
An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Tuesday at the Southeast Texas Forensic Science Center in Tyler, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.
Representatives of both the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and the Anderson County district attorney’s office were expected to attend the autopsy, according to the sheriff.
Due to the condition of the remains, authorities were initially unable to determine the age, race or gender of the deceased person.
On Tuesday morning, Taylor, however, said investigators believe the deceased person to be a female. Autopsy results should shed light on some of the questions relating to the person’s characteristics, he further indicated.
Taylor said his agency believes the person had been deceased “anywhere from four to five days to a week or even longer.
“We’re just beginning to run leads down to find out who this person is,” Taylor said Tuesday. “We just don’t know yet.”
