PALESTINE —
Anderson County sheriff's authorities continued to process the scene Monday after a citizen discovered a decomposed human body on their property near the intersection of Texas 155 and FM 321, north of Palestine, late Sunday afternoon.
Troy Black, chief deputy for the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, said deputies responded to a wooded area near the northwest corner of the intersection around 4 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a body being located there.
"Upon their arrival, deputies found decomposed human remains at that location," Black said this morning. "They contacted investigators who responded to the scene."
Due to the body's condition, authorities were unable to determine the deceased person's "race, sex or age at this time," according to Black.
The chief deputy said investigators are hopeful that an autopsy to be performed later this week will provide those answers.
When asked how long the person may have been deceased, Black responded, "We're looking at a week or longer."
The chief deputy also said there was "some clothing" recovered at the scene, adding investigators were unable to speculate on the deceased person's gender based on those items.
In addition to Anderson County sheriff's investigators, Black said representatives of the Anderson County district attorney's office and the Texas Rangers were also assisting in the investigation.
"They are currently processing the scene and collecting evidence," Black said late Monday morning.
Anderson County sheriff's Capt. Jay Russell is the case's lead investigator.
