PALESTINE —
A 35-year-old Palestine man was arrested late last week after authorities say they found him in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine during the course of a traffic stop.
William Crockett Penney, 35, of Palestine was charged with possession of a controlled substance less than 1 gram shortly after 3 p.m. Friday, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.
Penney was a passenger in a 1993 Subaru Impreza operated by a 34-year-old female which was stopped for a seatbelt violation, according to the sheriff.
The stop was made by Anderson County sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Chason and Gabe Wallace at 3:09 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Loop 256 and FM 320, according to Taylor.
Upon making contact with the vehicle’s occupants, the sheriff said the female driver was “acting very nervous.
“She was shaking,” Taylor said, “and very evasive with her answers.”
Officers ultimately gained consent to search the vehicle, according to the sheriff.
Inside the vehicle, officers located a Pall Mall cigarette package with “two or three cigarettes” and a Diamond matchbox, Taylor stated.
“Inside that matchbox was a small, clear plastic Ziplok baggy that included a small amount of a substance testing positive for methamphetamine,” the sheriff stated.
An “empty hypodermic needle” was located inside Penney’s boot, according to Taylor.
A pipe commonly used to smoke narcotics also was discovered inside the vehicle, the sheriff stated.
Records showed Penney was released from the Anderson County Jail Monday after posting a $7,500 bond set by Anderson County Justice of the Peace James Todd.
