PALESTINE —
Do you have questions about planting a fall garden?
The Anderson County Master Gardens Association will present the Lynn O’Daniel Lecture Series “Fall Vegetable Gardening: A Second Season” at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 26.
The free lecture will be presented by Patty Leander, a writer for Texas Gardener Magazine and a Master Gardener vegetable specialist. The lecture will be held at the Ben E. Keith Community Room, 2019 W. Oak St. in Palestine.
“She’s an expert on gardening and this is the time of the year to start thinking about putting in a fall garden,” ACMGA Vice President Sue Commander said.
Leander’s presentation will provide tips for planting a fall garden, with information on recommended vegetable varieties, suggestions for harvest and preparation, and organic techniques for soil-building and pest control.
“She will have a question-and-answer period at the end of the lecture for those with questions,” Commander said.
Leander is a native Texan who is passionate about home-grown vegetables. She loves to grow and eat vegetables and encourages others to do the same, using horticultural principles that will lead to success in the vegetable garden. She has a B.S. in Food and Nutrition from Texas Tech University.
The Anderson County Master Gardens Association started the free lecture series several years ago as a memorial to former member Lynn O’Daniel.
The Master Gardeners hold tree sales in the spring, maintain the demonstration garden in front of the Federal Building in downtown Palestine and help with the cleanup in the garden at BARC, The Humane Society.
The Master Gardeners association also sponsors the “Grow Your Own Garden” program for select families.
“We get them started on a small garden and help them select the plants. Right now we are sponsoring four families and plan increase that to eight families for the fall,” Commander said.
Several members also give gardening talks to local garden clubs and in various places in the community.
