PISD to dedicate high school Sunday

PALESTINE — A ceremony dedicating the new Palestine High School will be held Sunday afternoon, with state officials and local leaders expected to be in attendance.

The ribbon cutting will be held at 1:45 p.m. Sunday in front of the new high school at 1600 S. Loop 256, while the dedication ceremony is set to start at 2 p.m. in the school’s new auditorium.

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples, a Palestine High School graduate, will give the dedication address, while former Palestine Mayor Jack Selden, also a PHS alumnus, also will provide remarks.

State Rep. Byron Cook, R-Corsicana, also will participate in Sunday’s ceremony.

District, campus and student leaders also are scheduled to participate in Sunday’s dedication.

The new high school is the final phase of a historic $64 million bond package overwhelmingly approved by Palestine Independent School District voters in May 2009.

The high school was constructed at a total cost of approximately $35.7 million.

The new high school includes new competition and auxiliary gyms, with the former featuring a drop down scoreboard and a capacity of approximately 1,200.

The state-of-the-art high school also includes a new 758-seat auditorium, new band hall and cafeteria.

PISD Superintendent Jason Marshall told the Herald-Press earlier this month that he believed the overall building offers PHS students the opportunity for an outstanding education.

“I know there are schools that have better this or better that,” Marshall said, “but, for an overall facility, I just don’t think you can beat it.”

The first day of class for PHS and other area students is Monday, Aug. 27.
