Search for escapee continues

PALESTINE — Palestine police continued on Friday to search for a 22-year-old man whom they say escaped from the back of a squad car following his arrest on a theft charge one day earlier.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday, local authorities say Zachary Burris, 22, of Palestine made his way through the window of a squad car after being arrested on South Loop 256 near Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Burris had been arrested for a theft offense committed a short time earlier at the Wal-Mart store, according to Palestine Police Sgt. James Muniz.

“They (officers) put him in the back seat of the car,” Muniz said Friday afternoon. “Somehow, he was able to get the window open, crawled out and ran off.”

Multiple units responded to the area, as well as a team of dogs from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, but authorities were unable to locate the suspect.

Muniz said officers were “tending to another issue” when Burris, who was handcuffed, escaped from the squad car.

The sergeant said his agency had “addressed” the issue that allowed the suspect to open the window and escape from custody.

As of late Friday afternoon, police continued to search for Burris, according to Muniz.

Once captured, Burris will face the additional charge of escape from custody, the sergeant added.
