Two Slocum burglary suspects arrested

PALESTINE — Anderson County authorities arrested two suspects and are seeking a third in Tuesday’s burglary of a pair of concession stands at the Slocum athletic fields.

Corey Mikel Lockett, 19, of Elkhart and Daniel Frais Chavez, 20, of Slocum were arrested Tuesday and charged in connection with a pair of burglaries occurring early Tuesday at the Slocum baseball and softball fields on Texas 294, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, Taylor said his agency was still searching for a third suspect in the offense.

“We believe that to be a (male) juvenile,” Taylor said.

Around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, Anderson County sheriff’s Sgt. Gabe Wallace was dispatched to the Slocum schools “in reference to some witnesses observing somebody on a four-wheeler trying to get into the baseball field concession stand,” according to the sheriff.

“When Sgt. Wallace got down there, he observed a four-wheeler by the ag shop at the school,” Taylor said. “The four-wheeler took off when he saw Sgt. Wallace.”

The sergeant pursued the four-wheeler and quickly took the driver, who was identified as Lockett, into custody, according to the sheriff.

Multiple items, including an AED (Automated External Defibrillator); batting helmets; frozen food items; and bottles of Diet Coke, were discovered in the area and had either fallen off of or been discarded from the four-wheeler, authorities indicated.

“He (Lockett) lost some of that stuff when the deputy chased him around to the back of the building,” the sheriff stated.

Authorities believe the suspects used a four-wheeler to gain entry into at least one of the concession stands which are located on opposite sides of Texas 294.

The ATV operated by Lockett had “a yellow strap tied behind the four-wheeler where they had jerked the metal door off the concession stand,” according to the sheriff.

“It had a door handle on it (the end of the strap),” Taylor said.

Witnesses also reported seeing two other individuals on a different four-wheeler around the fields, according to Taylor.

Chavez, who is believed to be one of those individuals, turned himself in at the Anderson County Jail around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday after learning that authorities were seeking him in connection with the offense, according to the sheriff.

Lockett has been charged with two counts of burglary of a building, while Chavez has been charged with a single count of the same offense, according to Taylor.

“I thank the citizens who were paying attention,” Taylor said. “They apparently heard some ruckus and contacted us.”
