PALESTINE —
A bingo, hotdog and hamburger fund-raiser will be held Saturday to help raise funds to purchase a new van to transport local veterans to the Veterans Affairs clinics in Temple and Waco.
The fund-raiser for the Disabled American Veterans Van Fund will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Knights of Columbus Hall in Palestine.
“We transported a little more than 1,200 veterans to their appointments to Temple and Waco VA clinics last year. Every three years we have to get a new van when the mileage gets around 200,000,” DAV van volunteer driver coordinator Dan Dudik said Thursday. “We drive the van five days a week back and forth to the clinics.”
The kitchen will open at 11 a.m., with the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary selling hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks throughout the day.
The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 991 will hold a flag ceremony at 11:45 a.m.
Pull Tabs Mania bingo will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. with regular bingo from 1:30 to 4 p.m., coordinated by the Knights of Columbus.
“It’s a good way to have an enjoyable day while helping out the veterans by raising funds for another van,” Dudik said. “All the money we raise Saturday will go to the van fund.”
The event is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, DAV Chapter 63, VVA Chapter 991 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3907.
Several years ago when the VA Clinic in Palestine opened, local veterans organizations saw a need to purchase a van to take local veterans to their specialists at the VA clinics in Temple and Waco. DAV has a partnership with Ford which enables them to purchase the van for the clinic at a discounted rate. The veterans organizations work to raise money throughout the year to purchase a new van every three years due to the high mileage and the wear-and-tear on the vehicle.
“When the van gets over 200,000 miles, I don’t feel comfortable taking veterans — many of them in bad health — in a vehicle that could breakdown, which is why we are raising funds for a new van,” Dudik said.
Donation buckets will be available Saturday for those wanting to leave a donation for the DAV Van Fund.
