PALESTINE —
Gym floors at both Westwood High School and Westwood Junior High School are set to be replaced this summer following Monday’s regular meeting of the district’s board of trustees.
During Monday’s meeting, the board reviewed facility needs and discussed possible summer projects.
Replacing the aging floors at both schools’ gymnasiums rose to the top of the list, according to WISD Superintendent Dr. Ed Lyman.
“Because they’ve been refinished so many times, they’re pretty worn,” Lyman said. “Those are our No. 1 priorities for the summer — to get those floors replaced.”
Earlier this year, a representative of Lufkin-based Scott & Strong Architects gave the district a pair of estimates for the two gym floors which ranged from a total of $122,000 to $209,000.
The WISD chief indicated last month that he was surprised at the disparity between the estimates.
The district has solicited bids from five companies to replace the floors, according to Lyman.
“The gym floors, as they are, have been there a long time. They’re wearing very thin,” WHS coach Roger Mays said. “The maintenance department goes in to re-sand and finish them, but they’re getting to the point...that they’re on their last leg. I feel like its the best time to do it, with the resurgence of things (in the athletic department). I think it’s a necessity, and it’s going to be good for the kids that are on them.”
With the fall volleyball season kicking off in late August, Lyman said it was critical for the board to make a prompt decision since such companies do many similar jobs during the summer.
“If we don’t make a decision soon,” the WISD chief said, “we probably won’t have them ready by the start of school (Aug. 27).”
In other business Monday, the board also:
• APPROVED contracts of campus principals, assistant principals, athletic director, finance director and curriculum director.
• APPROVED Band Booster Club request for a trailer purchase.
• REVIEWED the district’s Immunization Report.
• APPROVED the school calendar for 2012-13.
• ACCEPTED bid of $43,035.90 from Flair Data for e-rate master switch.
• APPROVED Smith, Lambright & Associates as the district’s outside auditor for 2012.
• APPROVED high school course catalogue for 2012-13 school year.
