Sheriff seeking suspects in theft of ATVs

PALESTINE — Anderson County sheriff’s authorities are continuing to seek information in the Labor Day weekend theft of a pair of ATVs and trailer from a local deer lease.

Troy Black, chief deputy for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, said his agency was contacted last weekend by a complainant reporting that property had been stolen from their deer lease near the intersection of FM 321 and Texas 19.

The complainant reported that sometime between 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31 and 11:30 a.m. Saturday that “someone cut the chain to the gate leading to his 300-acre deer lease,” according to Black.

“They (the offender or offenders) then removed a trailer containing two ATVs,” Black said.

The chief deputy said the 16-foot flatbed trailer had an estimated value of $700, while the two stolen ATVs -- a 2009 Polaris Razor and 2008 Kawasaki Brute -- were valued at $15,000 and $7,000, respectively.

Anyone with information leading to the arrest of a suspect or suspects in the case is eligible to receive a reward of up to $1,000 from Anderson County Crimestoppers.

Crimestoppers may be contacted by calling 903-729-TIPS (8477).

Black warned county residents to take steps to avoid being a theft victim.

“With the deer season approaching, we want to remind everyone that deer camps are a popular target for thefts,” Black said. “People need to make sure they lock up all items left at the deer camp and don’t leave any items at the deer camp that they can transport back and forth when they go to hunt. They also need to be on the lookout for anyone checking out their camp.”
