The Palmetto State Quartet and Shiloh will be in concert on Jan. 16 at the Gospel Music Hall located in Athens. The doors will open at 5 p.m. and the concert will begin at 6 p.m. There will be door prizes, concessions and wheel chair accessible as well as great Southern Gospel singing.

Celebrate Recovery

at New Life

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered 12-step program that not only addresses alcohol and chemical addictions but all your hurts, habits and hang-ups. FBC Neches

study offered

First Baptist Church Neches, located at 200 Anderson St., will be offering a special “January Bible Study” beginning this Sunday through Wednesday. The study will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday and will meet each evening Monday through Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Dr. Mike Smith, director of Church Ministries at the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, will be leading the study. The study will be teaching stories for Life-Parables of the Kingdom out of the book of Matthew. Dr. Smith was recently the Director of Missions for the Dogwood Trails area. There will be study materials available for each person attending. There is no cost for any that attend. A nursery will be available for nursery age children. The Rev. Nathan McBridewill begin a sermon series on “The Gifts of the Holy Spirit” beginning this Sunday in the morning worship service.

Coffee with the pastor meets at 10 a.m. on Mondays.

Old Bethel

Old Bethel Baptist Church, located on CR 2706, in Tennessee Colony will hold a benefit for Clarance Coleman. The benefit program will begin at 3 p.m. on Jan. 31. All are asked to come and help out.

Women of Grace at Southside Baptist Church will have a Salad Supper on Tuesday in the fellowship hall. Bring your favorite salad to share and join us!

“Come to Me”, the women’s conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. oJan. 16. The keynote speaker is Janis Harris of Evangelistic Temple. Four other women of God also are lined up to speak. Angela Witte from First Baptist Church; Kristin Warren from Palestine Church; Angela Woodard from Southside Baptist and Suzanne Bentley from Evangelistic Temple will all be speaking during this conference. The ladies of Sheridan Terrace Baptist Church will participate in the Houston-Anderson County BMA Women’s Missionary Auxiliary beginning at 10 a.m. on Jan. 9. Bethlehem Lutheran

Bethlehem Lutheran Church, located at 1515 S. Loop 256, across from Palestine High School, celebrates the First Sunday after the Epiphany this week. Sunday school and adult Bible class is at 9 a.m. In the 10:15 a.m. service, the Rev. David R. Bergman’s sermon will be “The Baptism Connection,” based on Luke 3. After the service the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League will hold its monthly meeting. The annual Choir Epiphany party will take place at the Jackson’s home beginning at 4 p.m.

The Bethlehem Church Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Plans are under way for the congregation’s third annual “Chili Friday,” which will be held Jan. 29.

Wednesday activities at Bethlehem include junior confirmation class for sixth and seventh grade at 4 p.m. Choir practice begins at 5:15 p.m. followed by a potluck supper at 6 p.m. Members are encouraged to bring food to share for this time of fellowship. Bible classes meet at 7 p.m. The adult class topic is “God Speaks to Us.”

Cemetery meeting set

The Magnolia Brotherhood Cemetery will hold its business meeting beginning at 11 a.m. Jan. 16 at the Green Bay Community Center in Tucker. The purpose of the meeting will be to give the year end report, elect a president and personnel task.

City Wide Ushers

The City Wide Ushers will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church. The group meets on the second Saturday of each month at different churches.

Broyles Chapel

Bible study classes for all ages begins at 9:45 a.m. at Broyles Chapel Baptist Church followed by worship at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. A church nursery is provided for all services.

This evening at 6:30 p.m. is the church’s regular dominoes night held at the fellowship hall.

This Saturday the Budget committee will meet at the church at 11 a.m.

A wedding will be held at the church beginning at 2 p.m. this Sunday. A meal will follow the ceremony. The wedding couple will provide the meat and members are asked to bring side dishes and desserts. This meal will be held in lieu of our Fifth Sunday meal. All members are invited to attend the wedding and the meal.

At 6 p.m. Sunday is the church’s regular monthly business meeting followed by choir practice at 7 p.m.

Awana has resumed after the Christmas holiday beginning at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesdays. The January Bible study has begun meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays following Awana. The study is led by the Rev. Willie Reagan, church pastor. The Bible study is a study on “Kingdom Parables” from the book of Matthew chapters: 16, 18 and 24. The study will last for six weeks.

The pastor search committee will meet at 5 p.m. Jan. 17.

Mt. Vernon

Church school classes will meet for general assembly at 9:45 a.m. to study the means of Jesus’ victory over temptation as recorded in Matthew 4:1-11 at the historic Mt. Vernon African Methodist Episcopal Church. The church is located at 913 Calhoun St.

During the 11 a.m. service the youth of the church have the responsibility of worship call, the Decalogue and the benevolent offering. The Rev. Hamilton will officiate the divine praise service. She will be assisted by the Licentiate, Bobby Carwell.

The midweek activity schedule resumes at 6 p.m. Wednesday for prayer service, Bible study, pastoral teaching and lesson review.

Holy Ground

Holy Ground Worship Center meets in its recently purchased and newly remolded property on Rusk Highway. one mile from Loop 256.

The Sunday morning worship service starts at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Benny Burlison is the pastor. Pat Asher is the Praise and Worship director and sings a special in each service. Many of the songs are of his own composition.

Sunday worship gathering begins at 10:45 a.m. with the Rev. Jay Abernathy continuing a sermon series “New Year: Family Time.”  Immediately following the morning gathering, the Sunday school and Bible Study Leadership will meet in the Youth Suite. Sunday afternoon begins at 4 p.m. with the Mom-to-Mom Bible study and at 6 p.m. the evening gathering along with Bible Drill for the children.

On Tuesdays, WMU Faithful Prayers will meet at 10 a.m. Senior adult game time begins at 1 p.m. and Youth Branch (Bible Study) for teen guys and girls gather at 7 p.m. at the church.  

Wednesday activities include churchwide prayer time at 5:30 p.m., followed by Adult Bible Study groups at 6 p.m. Children’s ministries activities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a snack dinner. At 5:50 p.m., GA’s, RA’s, and Wiggle Worship meet.  

Youth Pastor Scott Dishman invites youth in grades 7-12 to Cultivate which meets each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

The college-age Bible study group continue their study on the book “Crazy Love” by Francis Chan. It gathers Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the church in the Youth Room.

Court Drive

Court Drive Church of Christ’s Sunday services begin with adult class starting at 9 a.m. Morning worship begins at 10 a.m. with Minister Paul Jones delivering the message. Child care is available during service and children's church for 3 years old through the second grade also begins after the collection for their time of worship. Paul will also be teaching Wednesday night’s class.

Grace Bible

Sunday services at Grace Bible Church begin at 11 a.m. and are held at 1390 Gardner Dr. (turn left off Texas 155 North and continue 1/10 of a mile on FM 315, GBC will be on the left). The informal service includes contemporary music and practical, expository teaching by Dan Gold. A fellowship lunch follows the service.

A new Adult Couples Sunday School class will begin at 10 a.m. this Sunday in Focus Room 3. This class will be led by Rick and Cindy Taylor and use the materials entitled “Extraordinary Marriage:  God’s Plan for Your Journey” authored by Rodney and Selma Wilson. This study paints a compelling vision of an achievable future — and provides a step-by-step plan for couples to evaluate their own marriage and work toward that vision. Contact the church office to sign-up for this class.

The youth guys continue to meet from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Robert Moore, Minister to Youth, leads this Bible study.

St. Philip’s sets

annual parish meeting

The Gospel for Sunday at St. Philip’s Episocpal Church, the first Sunday after the Epiphany: The Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ is Luke 3:15-17, 21-22.

The Rev. Ted Welty will officiate at both the 7:30 a.m. Rite I, and the 10 a.m. Rite II services. Both services include Holy Communion and St. Philip’s worship services are celebrated in the traditional Anglican manner. The sermon topic for Sunday is “Outward and Visible Signs.”

New ECW officers will be installed at the 10 a.m. service. Childcare is available at the 10 a.m. Sunday service. The weekly Christian Education Class resumes at the new meeting time of 8:45 a.m. and continues the study of the Book of Exodus. Sunday’s topic is “With God on the Mountain.”

A midweek service of Holy Communion, Rite II with Healing, is celebrated every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Choir practice follows the service at 6:30 p.m.

St. Philip’s annual parish meeting and covered dish dinner iss set for 6 p.m. Monday. Four new Vestry members will be elected to replace four outgoing Vestry members. Annual reports from church organizations will be given.

The Episcopal Church Women’s monthly meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Parish Hall. Daughters of the King will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The Women’s Cursillo Group meets weekly on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. The Men’s Cursillo Group meets weekly on Fridays at 8 a.m.

A special ECW fund raising event is scheduled for Jan. 27. The proceeds of which will benefit numerous community outreach programs. In true Mardi Gras fashion, In the Spirit of Mardi Gras will feature a lunch and dinner of jambalaya with all of the traditional accompaniments. Tickets are available at $7 each from any member of The Episcopal Church Women, or by calling the church office for more information. The seated luncheon and dinner will be held in St. Philip’s Parish Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. Take-out meals will also be available at both times.

Missions Month

at Calvary Baptist 

January is Missions Month at Calvary Baptist Church with a different missionary every Sunday.  This Sunday, Jmissionary Larry Odom will present his field during the 6 p.m. service.

Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. with classes for all ages and a nursery provided for all services. The worship hour begins at 11 a.m.

The Ladies in Fellowship Together will meet Monday in Felton Hall at the church.  The Tuesday Night Teens will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the youth building.  King’s Kids will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Tennessee Colony

State of the Church address will be held Sunday at Tennessee Colony Church. Where were we, where are we and where does God want to take us in 2010? All of this and more will be presented Sunday morning.

During the 6 p.m. Sunday services, the church will ratify its constitution and by laws. All church officers are asked to be in attendance. Evening services begin at 6pm.

The Harper Family from Bunker, Mo. will present an evening of gospel music at 7 p.m. Jan. 16. Bluegrass and gospel will be on tap all evening. Several other groups will be present too including the Gospel-Aires from Corsicana. A love offering will be taken.

High Attendance Sunday is set for Jan. 17. All members, former members, friends and families are invited to share the day with us. Families who have the most members of their families present will be recognized. Special music will be enjoyed by the Harper Family.

Communion will be held Jan. 24. Fifth Sunday will be held Jan. 31 and missions offering will be sent to B. R. Singh of India.

Several events are upcomingin February including a kitchen pantry shower/party and a church work day.

Women’s fellowship

The Women of Destiny at the West Union Baptist Church Will celebrate their Annual Womens' Fellowship at 6 p.m. Jan. 18, located at 1223 W. Lacy St.

The guest speaker will be the Rev. Theresa Hamilton of Mt. Vernon A.M.E. Church of Palestine. The fellowship is celebrated on Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday to encourage women of all races to celebrate Christ together.

“We invite all women to come fellowship with us,” a news release said.

Emmanuel Baptist

Communion held

The Carpenter’s House celebrated the new year with Communion.

at FBC Elkhart

A special service of recommitment as the new year begins will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Elkhart. The Lord's Supper will be observed as a family of faith. 

“It is a special and powerful time when we gather together remembering the Lord with these symbols of His life and sacrifice,” a church news release said. ”This is not only for active members but those who have not been in awhile.”

The Greenes

to honor Shelton

 Greater Brown Springs Baptist Church will honor Annie Shelton for more than 20 years of service in a musical celebration at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Gospel concert

set Jan. 16 in Athens

The Palmetto State Quartet and Shiloh will be in concert on Jan. 16 at the Gospel Music Hall located in Athens. The doors will open at 5 p.m. and the concert will begin at 6 p.m. There will be door prizes, concessions and wheel chair accessible as well as great Southern Gospel singing.

The Gospel Music Hall is located at 6513 Texas 19 South in Athens.

Christmas banquet held

New Chapel Baptist Church, with the support of Greater Brown Spring Baptist Church, Oak Grove Baptist Church, New Brown Spring Baptist Church, New Canaan Baptist Church, Jerusalem Baptist Church, Provident Baptist Church, Bethel A.M.E. Church and Jasper Baptist Church, hosted the Christmas Banquet on Dec. 19 at the Palestine Civic Center.

The banquet was a success due in part to the hard work provided by members of these supporting churches, a news release said.

Toastmistress for the evening was Lana Gale Beckham of St. Luke C.M.E. Church of Terrell. The keynote address was delivered by Len Williams of Concord Baptist Church of Dallas.

One highlight of the banquet was the “high hat and heels fashion show” emceed by the Rev. and Mrs. Tommie Calhoun of Sand Flat Baptist Church and judged by the “Mothers Board” from each church. The winners of the fashion show were Mr. and Mrs. Preston Brown of Bethel A.M.E. who received a certificate for lunch at Shep’s Bar-B-Que.

Music was provided by Hilda Pinson, Montalba Male Chorus and youth and adult choirs made up of members from each participating church. Closing out the event was a special presentation of the Christmas story titled “The Greatest Gift” as expounded by the Rev. Dennis Smith of New Canaan Baptist Church and assisted by Cathy Kee, Stephanie Wickware, Camille Vaughn and the youth from the churches.
