Casino gambling not for Texas

Published Fri., April 17, 2009

Once again the possibility of casino gambling in Texas has reared its ugly head. Those in favor of it point to the money to be gained from taxes, tourism, jobs, etc. I would argue that the increased cost of social services, law enforcement and human misery would eclipse any gain from casino gambling.

Like so many ideas put forth by some politicians, and the lobbyists looking for their support, the reality seldom measures up to the promise. We are presently enduring a shameful loss of homes due to greed and foolishness. Do we want another even more shameful loss of homes and property and broken families due to gambling? After all this so-called sport is addictive. By the way, whatever happened to the notion that the lottery would do much to solve the problem of school funding?
