Support PISD bond election

Published Thur., April 9, 2009

I have just returned from an information tour of PISD campuses in connection with the current bond election. We saw friendly, positive staff and orderly students, but outdated, unattractive, and, in some cases, unsafe facilities which defy description. Our students and staff deserve better, and we can provide it by voting yes to the bond proposal. Palestine and PISD are truly at a crossroads. By voting yes, we can bring our school facilities up to date and provide an inviting educational setting for those thinking of making our beautiful city or county their home. No one likes to vote themselves more taxes and it is easy to look at this like the gentleman of some means who was recently overheard in a store exclaiming loudly, “They are asking us to take on a $64 million debt.” In this case, the man’s monthly tax increase would be about equal to the price of a meal at a good restaurant for his family, or the price of a couple of Big Gulp drinks a day. Are out children worth it? You bet they are. If you are over 65 and have a homestead exemption, your school tax rate will not increase. We have a school board and administration who have us on the right track. Test scores and discipline are headed in the right direction. Now we, the taxpayers, need to step up, take ownership of our schools, and support this bond. For the kids, please vote yes.
