Building starts on new WHS fieldhouse

Less than two weeks ago, construction for Westwood’s much-anticipated new fieldhouse began.
The construction is located between the high school and football stadium next to the practice field.
“As the district has grown, this has been a dream and now it’s finally taking shape into reality,” Westwood school board president Carolyn Booker said. “It’s going to be awesome for the kids and we’re very excited about it.”
Other members of the school board were out at the site Saturday afternoon to survey what’s been done so far.
The outline has been dug and bulldozed and the construction company is doing soil tests to make sure the soil is good.
“We’re thrilled to see it finally coming together. It’s finally begun,” Westwood superintendent Ed Lyman said. “We believe the kids will be excited about it and hopefully it will generate more enthusiasm in the community as well.”
The structure will be 12,000-square feet, with dressing rooms for the varsity, junior varsity and freshman boys’ teams.
It will also house the athletic director’s office as well as an assistant coaches’ office, film room and training room.
In addition, the locker numbers are being increased from 36 to 50 lockers.
“The good thing about this is that they’re building for growth,” Westwood Director of Operations Shane Jones said. “This is something that has been in the works for two years and it’s going to be nice and a great addition to our high school.”
Jones said he hopes the fieldhouse can be completed by August so that the football team can use the facilities, but said it might be as late as September before the project is finished.

Cayuga dominating during district play
BETHEL — The way the Cayuga Wildcats have been playing in District 21-A has left head coach Greg Jenkins in a catch-22.
The Wildcats have been dominating district play. In seven district wins, Cayuga has outscored its opponents by an average of 40.4 points a game. The Wildcats’ closest district win was by 15 points and they have won three games by 49 or more points.
“It is a double-edged sword for us,” Jenkins said. “Because of the games we have played, we have had to put our starters on the bench more than other teams do.

BETHEL — The Cayuga Ladycats are in the driver’s seat for district and Tuesday night Lauren Costlow was at the wheel.
Costlow scored a game-high 18 points, including making four three pointers, and the Ladycats defeated Hubbard 50-33.
“I have been waiting for Lauren all year,” Cayuga head coach Terry Short. “Since district has started, she has been playing on first and tonight was huge for her.”

Kennedy helps lead Cayuga to playoff win
FAIRFIELD — Cayuga quarterback Broc January had only one word to describe teammate Malcome Kennedy Friday night — Superman.
Cayuga head coach Tommy Allison could only shake his head and agree.
Kennedy had three interceptions, including one for a touchdown, and made an acrobatic touchdown catch as the Wildcats edged Bremond 35-32 in the Class A-Region III, Division II semifinals at Eagle Stadium.

A new twist in the rivalry
For the first time in the young history of the Palestine and Westwood games, the shoe is on the other foot.
When the two teams meet Friday night, it will be a different scenario then the teams have had in the past.
In the first two meetings between Palestine and Westwood in 2004 and 2005, the teams met late in the season with the Wildcats getting prepared for the playoffs and the Panthers getting ready for basketball season.
But this year, the tables have been flipped when the two teams face each other Friday night at Panther Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
