Burglars caught in the act

Anderson County sheriff's authorities have one suspect in custody and are searching for two others after a property owner caught the burglars in the act Monday.

Jeremy Jerome Shedd, 23, whose last known address was in Rusk, was arrested and charged with burglary of a habitation Monday afternoon after authorities were summoned to CR 354, also known as Rocky Point Road, in the Neches area on a report of a burglary, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

The property owner and two teenaged boys — the man's nephew and a friend — arrived at the property in the 2000 block of CR 354 Monday afternoon for a camping trip, according to the sheriff.

The property includes a cabin and storage shed, Taylor added.

As the man drove up to his cabin, he observed two men carrying property belonging to him, according to the sheriff.

"He (the property owner) pulls his .40-caliber Glock and starts firing at them," Taylor said.

The men raced into the woods and neither were believed to have been shot, according to the sheriff.

Authorities were contacted at 2:20 p.m. Monday, according to records.

Taylor said authorities believe the property owner fired approximately 15 shots at the fleeing suspects.

"We found numerous hits around the trees near the shed and also in the shed," Taylor said.

Based on his agency's investigation, the sheriff said the property owner, who resides in the Dallas area, "absolutely...was well within his rights" in firing at the suspects.

A team of tracking dogs from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's Institutional Division also responded to the scene, Taylor said.

"We did have a track on these people for about two hours in the woods and then lost them," the sheriff stated.

Shedd was arrested a short time after authorities arrived on the scene, according to the sheriff. He was walking on CR 354 and believed to have been at a nearby cemetery where authorities believe some of the property was being "staged," Taylor added.

A Mider saw, a nail gun and miscellaneous tools believed to have been taken from the shed were discovered at the cemetery, according to Taylor.

"We found a car we believe to be involved," Taylor said.

That vehicle is "possibly" registered to one of the other two suspects, he added.

Authorities believe the suspects also attempted to "hot wire" a four-wheeler located near the shed, according to the sheriff.

A flat screen television and other property was stacked on the four-wheeler, he stated.

Representatives of the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Anderson County Drug Investigative Unit, along with constables Gary Briley and Doug Lightfoot, assisted at the scene, according to Taylor.

The sheriff said the suspects apparently gained access to the cabin and nearby shed by prying open hasps on the doors.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Shedd remained in the Anderson County Jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond set by Anderson County Justice of the Peace Carl Davis.
