Man denied bond reduction
A local state district judge has declined to lower the bond of a 27-year-old Tennessee Colony man accused of lying about his military service.
After hearing testimony from four witnesses Friday morning, 349th State District Judge Pam Foster Fletcher ordered that Jason Lynn Nichols’ bond remain at $150,000.
Nichols was indicted last month by an Anderson County grand jury on two counts of aggravated perjury, a third-degree felony, relating to his testimony during a child custody hearing this past summer.
During that hearing, Nichols provided testimony that he had served in Iraq and Afghanistan and been awarded the Service Medal, a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts, according to the state.
Nichols further testified he returned to the U.S. from his overseas service in 2005, according to the state.
Military records, however, indicate Nichols was admitted into the U.S. Army in April 2000 and discharged in July 2000 after just three months of service due to “conduct” and “excessive absences,” the state has alleged.
During Friday’s hearing, Nichols testified that he needed to get out of jail to have a back operation in Temple in mid-January.
Following the 45-minute hearing, Fletcher ruled that Nichols’ bond remain at $150,000.
Nichols’ trial is currently set to begin March 9, according to Anderson County District Attorney Doug Lowe.
Nichols is represented by local attorney Colin McFall.
As of late Monday afternoon, Nichols remained in the Anderson County Jail, according to records.
