Traffic stop leads to arrests
Two Anderson County residents were arrested Monday afternoon during the course of a routine traffic stop on U.S. 79 after authorities say they found a small amount of methamphetamine in their possession.
James Edward Henderson, 29, of Palestine and Jennifer Henderson, 38, of Elkhart were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance less than 1 gram around 4:15 p.m. Monday during the course of a traffic stop on U.S. 79, west of the Palestine city limits, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.
The sheriff said Anderson County sheriff’s deputy Gerald Kerr was working “stationary radar” on U.S. 79 near the intersection of CR 2123 when he clocked an eastbound Pontiac passenger car doing 79 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone.
Kerr subsequently stopped the vehicle which was operated by a 21-year-old female, according to the sheriff. The Hendersons were the other two passengers in the car, he added.
During his investigation, the deputy obtained consent to search the vehicle and its occupants, Taylor said.
Two syringes in Jennifer’s Henderson’s purse “field tested positive for methamphetamine,” according to Taylor. A small baggy belonging to Jennifer Henderson also contained “a white crystalline residue which field tested positive for methamphetamine,” the sheriff added.
A cellophane package discovered in James Henderson’s right front pants pocket also “contained a white crystalline substance which field tested positive for methamphetamine,” the sheriff stated.
The vehicle’s driver was not arrested, according to Taylor.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, James and Jennifer Henderson each remained in the Anderson County Jail in lieu of a $7,500 bond set by Anderson County Justice of the Peace James Todd.
