Elkhart man charged with injury to child

Anderson County sheriff’s authorities have arrested a 27-year-old Elkhart man in connection with injuries sustained earlier this week by the man’s 26-day-old newborn son.
Michael Lomax, 27, of Elkhart was arrested and charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury Friday afternoon, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.
Lomax’ charge carried a $200,000 bond set by Anderson County Justice of the Peace Carl Davis, according to the sheriff.
As of Saturday, Lomax remained in the Anderson County Jail.
Lomax was arrested at the sheriff’s office Friday after he had gone there to speak to officers, according to the sheriff.
“After we talked to him,” Taylor said, “he was arrested.”
Late Monday night, authorities have said Lomax brought his 26-day-old infant son to the emergency room at Palestine Regional Medical Center with a broken right humerus; a broken right femur; and possible brain hemorrhaging. The infant was subsequently transferred to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.
Lomax told authorities the infant was injured when he accidentally dropped him, according to the sheriff.
“They (the newborn’s injuries) are not consistent with what he said happened which was a fall -- that he dropped the child from his arms,” Taylor said. “His story is not consistent with the injuries to the child.”
The infant was released from Children’s Medical Center Friday and has been placed in the home of “family members other than the parents,” according to the sheriff.
Taylor said his agency continues to investigate the case and indicated charges could be filed against additional persons.
Anderson County Sgt. Wendell Wilcher is the case’s lead investigator.
