LIFE BEHIND THE PINE CURTAINS: A Lesson in Irony

EDITOR’S NOTE: Life Behind the Pine Curtain is a series of anecdotes collected and edited by Herald-Press Publisher Gary Connor.

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever in the history of the United States.

Meanwhile, the National Forest Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us on countless signs placed in our national parks, "Please Do Not Feed the Animals.” Their stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.

This ends today's lesson. Please forward to every Congressman you know.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

Abraham Lincoln
