Back to School Bash slated Saturday, Aug. 18

A local church is hosting a Back to School Bash Saturday, Aug. 18 — giving away backpacks, school supplies and offering free haircuts for children.

Cornerstone Worship Center will hold the free event from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church, which also will include activities for children including a bounce house, cake walk and games.

“We want the community to know that we are here and want to help. We know it can be hard for parents during the back-to-school time,” said Amanda Malone, who pastors the church with her husband, David.

The church was given 70 backpacks full of school supplies from the Palestine Junior Service League to give away. The backpacks are separated with supplies for elementary and junior and high school students.

“Once we go through those backpacks, we also have school supplies to give away that the church has collected,” Malone said. “It may not be all of the supplies needed on school supply lists teachers have provided, but it will definitely be a good start.”

As of Wednesday, at least three hair stylists had confirmed to participate in the Back to School Bash, coordinated by Sondra Bell of Hairtique.

No proof of income is needed, the children just need to be school-aged and show up with the parents.

“If you know anyone who could use the help, send them to us on Saturday,” Malone said.

This is the second year the church has held a Back to School Bash.

“This year’s event definitely will be bigger and we hope to reach more people,” Malone said. “Our church is seven years old this year and we want people to know that we are here in the community.”

Over the  years, the church has held food drives, Christmas toy drives and other fund-raisers for the community.

The church is located at 1605 N. Missouri St. off U.S. 287/Texas 19 North. For more information, call the church at 903-729-6896.
